Dakota almost did a double-take when she saw Kenny. He must not have recognized her because he would have never stuck around if he had. But the moment they locked eyes and she started chasing him, Kenny sprinted in the opposite direction.

Dakota tore across the neighborhood like a bat out of hell. The world passed by her in a blur. It was a cat-and-mouse chase through the narrow alleyways as they sprinted through the neighborhood.

Dakota was vaguely aware that Mike was also chasing her, but she ignored him. She had never been this close to finding answers about her brother’s death, and she wasn’t going to miss this opportunity.

Eventually, Kenny slowed down, allowing Dakota to close the gap between them. She reached out with one hand and yanked down on Kenny’s shoulder, dragging both of them to the ground. The pair skidded over the grass before the dealer crumpled, and Dakota was quick to get the upper hand.

“Let me go!” Kenny shouted. “I didn’t do anything!”

“Then why’d you run when you saw me?” Dakota asked.

“Dakota!” Mike shouted, and he had his gun out and pointed at the suspect, now in Dakota’s custody. “What the hell is going on?”

Dakota snapped the handcuffs on Kenny, and once he was secure and restrained on the ground, she stood up to catch her breath.

“This is a suspect I’ve been looking for in my brother’s murder case,” Dakota answered. “He has answers to some questions I’ve wanted to ask for a long time.”

“I don’t know what the hell you’re talking about, pig,” Kenny shouted. “Let me go before my friends come to waste your ass!”

Dakota glanced around, wondering if there was any credibility to his threat. They were clearly out of their territory, and Dakota had no idea what kind of gangs were operating this far out of the city.

“We need to get him back to the cruiser,” Mike said, and then he patted Kenny down until he found some cash and some bags of drugs. “This ought to be enough to bring him to the station.”

“I’m not taking him to the station,” Dakota said, and she removed her gun and pressed it against the guy’s temple, and he immediately seized up. “I want answers.”

“Hey, whoa, you can’t fucking do this!” Kenny shouted, and then he looked up at Mike. “Are you going to let her do this to me?”

Dakota didn’t bother looking up at Mike. She could already feel him boring daggers into her skull. She hadn’t chased this guy down to get bogged down by procedure.

“Dakota,” Mike said.

Dakota finally peeled her angry gaze away from Kenny and looked up at Mike. It was clear he wasn’t pleased. But she had come too far, sacrificed too much, and she didn’t know when she’d get another chance like this.

“Just give me one minute,” Dakota said. “That’s all I need.”

“You need to get up,” Mike said. “Now.”

The way Mike spoke sounded more like a command than a request. She had never been someone who had bunked authority for the sake of being rebellious, but these were different circumstances.
